A random assortment of my thoughts on the new forums (this is a really meta thread, huh?):

  • A proper forum is a million times better for actual discussion than Discord channels. 10/10
  • Weekly updates and major announcements should definitely be posted in both places ad infinitum. Sure, it's an extra step, but that extra step is mostly Ctrl+C > Alt+Tab > click > Ctrl+V > Enter. There are a lot of people who use Discord primarily for other games/groups and are not particularly interested in joining the forum, and it's in the best interest of the server to make it easy for those people to hear about new changes as well. Plus I like getting updates in an app on my phone without having to open a browser.
  • On that note, I'm a little sad the focus is going to shift away from Discord a little, even if it's for the better. As someone who spent a few years posting to the old forum, frequently on mobile, I never imagined how much better of an experience it would be to use an app. Having to deal with a mobile website to participate in meaningful discussion when I'm not close to a PC is going to be a pain, especially if this one has the same bugs as the old FreeForums did.
  • I miss the dark theme.

I agree, this is the main purpose / reason for them. All too often discussions fizzle out or just get straight up lost. I also think forums tend to be better for discussions because they specifically AREN'T instantaneous messaging. It gives people some time to put thought into a lengthy post that discord doesn't really handle well.

Weekly updates and major announcements should definitely be posted in both places ad infinitum.

This can be done, however I may stop using @everyone in the discord. I feel a bit off about doing so. Side thought, I can use the forums to update as I please, then every week still post the compiled list. That way if you want to see the updates when they happen (sometimes on a daily basis) then you can come to the forums. If you're OK with waiting then they will be posted Sunday for you to digest as you please. Thoughts?

On that note, I'm a little sad the focus is going to shift away from Discord a little, even if it's for the better.

I wouldn't say the focus is shifting away from discord. Discord is still going to be a big part of our community, but I think I see it as more of an instant messenger than a place for thoughtful discussion. Certainly you can still post ideas to discord and I will reply there as well, but if it is a particularly good idea or has a lively conversation around it I may gently suggest we move it here to have a more structured discussion about it.

This forums mobile view is definitely much better than the old one. I just checked it on my phone and it looks pretty great actually, in my opinion

I miss the dark theme.

I do as well. The current color scheme is something I just did quickly to get something that is at least semi presentable, I hope. I haven't dug too deep into the styling of it but I will soon.

As you can see there are a lot of colors to change and I haven't played around with what they all do yet. Also, trust me the default dark theme did not work well, for what ever reason. So I will be looking into styling it to be a bit easier on the eyes (not so bright).

Also I'm going to move this down to website discussion

That makes perfect sense.

Just tested it out and I agree. The old forum used to have this issue where if you were writing a reply on mobile, and your phone fell asleep for more than a few minutes, you'd lose everything you typed and would have to start all over.

And the new color scheme looks great, I'd argue better than the dark theme (it's a better match for the color palette and feel of the server, and the color palette of MC overall as well as other MC-centric sites). It's mostly just nostalgia making me yearn for 8pt manila text on a black background.
